1/12/15 Collusion

Collusion

Recently there has been a browser app that has come out for Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, and other browsers that actually tracks if a website is tracking you down. This app is called Collusion Website Tracker and has been regarded well by organizations like TechSpot and TEDTalks. But the TEDTalks speaker who talked about Collusion liked how it worked but also somewhat bothered him.

Why was all the tracking a concern for the speaker?
Collusion was a concern to the speaker because after a certain and short period of time on the computer, he picked up 200 different websites that he hadn't gone to tracking him and his personal information. He also had his daughter go on the computer for a certain and short period of time with similar numbers of trackers. His daughter was only on children websites and the number was scary and staggering.

What do you think the trackers do with your information?
Based on how many different websites people go on a day and the popularity of the website, chances are the trackers will ignore you when you go on. But if you go on a website that has stringent trackers and not many users that go to the website, the risk for privacy protection is very high and risky. People's bank accounts and other personal information is precious and needed to be watched on.

Why would tracking be a good thing? Why would it be a bad thing?
Tracking in what way? There are many different motives of and for tracking. If a child is tracked by a predator, it is very bad; but if there is someone tracking them to track a predator down, it's helpful. Same goes for adults. Tracking helps and hurts.

Were you surprised at how many dot/connections were appearing?
It wasn't just the dots and connects appearing that was surprising. It was the fact how websites that people hadn't even gone to had been tracking and how many of them that were tracking. It was just weird how many connections can just be on one website.

How many do you think would appear for you? Describe your digital usage.
Wow, well I am on my phone, iPad, computer a lot on certain sites. Sometimes I'll go on a social network spree, looking at my Instagram; watching funny Vines; or trying to talk to people on Kik or Snapchat. Now those are concealed apps that are secure, am I right? But I might go on a Wikipedia spree, looking at different websites looking at history for different things. Now THAT is a trap that can get me many trackers and could be fatal.

  1. It really freaks me out to know that there are that many random strangers following me.
